Getting started

Frostrail alternates between preparing aboard the train and exploring frozen levels for materials, equipment, relics, and a route onward.

  • The train is the crew's mobile base and a fail state if destroyed
  • Levels can contain multiple exits leading to the next destination
  • Progression now carries between levels in the current development build

Cold, heat, food & clothing

Cold is the central environmental pressure. Blizzards can blind, slow, and eventually suffocate players; warmer clothing and some foods help mitigate exposure.

  • Heat is a survival requirement around the Eden Engine
  • Food grants buffs rather than serving as a mandatory hunger meter
  • Multiple new clothing sets were reported in the May 2026 update

Combat & weapons

The developers describe a guns-first combat model with WWI-influenced pistols, shotguns, rifles, machine guns, and basic melee options.

Operate the train

Crews must fuel, power, drive, maintain, expand, and defend the Eden Engine while using it for warmth, storage, crafting, and travel.

  • Logs, branches, and charcoal have been discussed as fuel inputs
  • Walls, hatches, doors, stations, storage, and carriages are planned upgrades
  • A broken or destroyed Eden Engine ends the run

Crafting & repair

Co-op crew planning

Frostrail supports single-player and online co-op for one to four players. No fixed character classes have been announced.
