Official premise
Steam’s about text is the primary lore source: a mighty empire now lies barren under unrelenting cold; ruins are haunted by revenants and eldritch horrors; an armored steam train carries Penitent Gardeners seeking salvation.
Lead designer Ez Jämsen says there is a broader background narrative and lore, but story is not the gameplay driver. The tone is tension and action with light creepy aesthetics, closer to Barotrauma than a dedicated horror game.
- Former empire frozen after a Void pact
- Penitent Gardeners travel north
- Revenants and eldritch horrors inhabit the ruins
- Survival systems push the player, not a stated quest log

Tone & references
Jämsen would not call Frostrail a horror game. Horror elements stay light because the game is an action-based multiplayer title; the intended feeling is tension—something leaping from a dark corner or looming on the horizon. Founder Aku Jauhiainen has cited Wolfenstein as a visual reference while stressing that Frostrail is more systems-heavy, in line with FakeFish’s Barotrauma DNA. Press and coverage often compare the moving-base fantasy to Snowpiercer or Metro Exodus; those are reviewer analogies, not developer-stated inspirations except where interviews name them.

The northward journey
The world is a sequence of levels. At the end of a level, the crew uses a tunnel to select the next route. Farther north, the world gets colder and harder. Everything happens in real time. Thorough exploration of points of interest can take two hours or more per level according to the founder interview; that is a development-time estimate, not a mission timer.
