Frostrail FAQ

A source-linked digest of FakeFish’s published FAQ and store answers covering player count, platforms, price, mods, engine, controllers, and Early Access—without filling gaps with speculation.

Compiled from official FAQ and store copy

How many people can you play with?

The official FAQ states that Frostrail has been developed with crews of one to four players. That range will continue to be evaluated during development and Early Access to balance crew size against challenge.

Engine and modding

The official FAQ identifies Unreal Engine 5. Full Barotrauma-style moddability is not planned, partly because of engine constraints. The team says it will explore other customizability and smaller-scale modding support during development and Early Access.

How much will it cost?

The FAQ says it is too early to give exact numbers and that the price will only be finalized at Steam release. The Early Access statement separately says the price may increase at version 1.0 depending on added content.

Playtests and Closed Beta

The FAQ originally said the plan was multiple closed tests before Early Access, plus a larger public playtest if the schedule allowed. A closed playtest ran April 16–May 4, 2026. A Closed Beta is scheduled to begin August 31, 2026; previous registrations remain valid.

PC, console, Linux, Mac, controller

Frostrail launches first in Early Access on PC via Steam. Console ports will be evaluated for version 1.0 and beyond. Controller support is planned but the FAQ warned it may not be ready at Early Access launch. Linux has a tentative yes; one developer primarily works on Linux, but support will only be fully confirmed at release. macOS is not confirmed.

Who is making Frostrail?

Yes: many FakeFish developers who worked on Barotrauma are on Frostrail, along with new talent hired for this project. FakeFish is based in Turku, Finland; it was founded in 2014 and the publisher’s press kit describes an independent studio of about 30 people. A Gamescom founder interview said around 15 people were working on Frostrail at that time. Shiro Unlimited, a publishing label of Shiro Games, is the publisher. Support mail listed on Steam is support@shirogames.com.
