About Frostrail

Frostrail is a dieselpunk open-world survival-crafting FPS for one to four players, developed by FakeFish and published by Shiro Unlimited in Unreal Engine 5.

Early Access planned Q4 2026

What kind of game is Frostrail?

Frostrail combines first-person combat, open-world survival crafting, exploration, base building, horror, inventory management, and resource management. Its defining base is an armored train called the Eden Engine.

  • Single-player and online co-op
  • Frozen level exploration
  • Craftable and modular firearms
  • Train operation, expansion, and defense
  • Cold, heat, food, clothing, Relics, and dungeons

Setting & story premise

The former empire was frozen after its Emperor made a pact with the Void. Players are Penitent Gardeners traveling north aboard the Eden Engine, scavenging abandoned settlements, wreckage, ruins, bunkers, strongholds, and dungeons while fighting Revenants and eldritch horrors.

Developer & publisher

FakeFish is a Turku, Finland studio founded in 2014 by five university friends. Publisher press kits describe an independent studio of about 30 people whose first game, Barotrauma, has sold more than three million units since 2019. Many Frostrail developers previously worked on Barotrauma; a Gamescom founder interview said around 15 people were working on Frostrail at that time. Shiro Unlimited, the publishing label of Shiro Games, is the publisher. Steam lists support@shirogames.com.

Five developer-described pillars

FakeFish founder Aku Jauhiainen describes five central pillars: the moving train base, action-oriented ranged combat, lethal cold, co-op, and a crafting/refining system. This framing explains why the Wiki is organized around train systems, weapons, survival, multiplayer, and production rather than treating the train as background art.

World & progression structure

The journey moves north through separate levels. At the end of a level, the crew uses a tunnel to select the next route; the world becomes colder and harder farther north. Terrain is hand-made, while natural assets, selected point-of-interest placement, loot, and enemy spawns use procedural systems for replayability.

The May 2026 update says progression now carries between levels and that new levels can provide multiple exits.

Languages, ratings & Steam features

The current Steam store lists interface and subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Simplified Chinese, with no full-audio language. Publisher press kits for the 2026 playtest and Closed Beta also name Polish as planned Early Access language support; Polish is not yet on the live Steam language list, so this wiki treats it as a press-kit plan rather than a live store fact.

Steam categories currently list single-player, multiplayer, co-op, online co-op, Steam Achievements, and Family Sharing. Genres listed are Action, Adventure, Indie, Simulation, and Early Access. The mature-content note says combat includes killing enemy creatures such as wolves and humanoids, with blood splatters. Regional ratings currently include Brazil 14, Germany 16, and IGRS 18; those boards also list language and alcohol/tobacco descriptors, which are not the same as confirmed gameplay meters.
