Food & Cooking

Food is cooked aboard the train and grants meaningful buffs rather than satisfying a mandatory hunger meter. Some food effects can help players withstand the cold.

How Food & Cooking Works

Updated October 8, 2026
Cooking station aboard the train
Food is cooked aboard the train as a buff and preparation system.

Food system

FakeFish has described food as a source of significant health and other stat boosts. The lead designer separately clarified that Frostrail does not use food as a mandatory hunger tax; it is a preparation and buff system.

  • Cook aboard the train
  • Use food to prepare for expeditions
  • Certain foods mitigate cold
  • Exact effects remain build-dependent

Food acquisition

Coverage of the April 2026 playtest, based on the released test brief, reports that wildlife can be hunted for food. The developers have not published species-specific drops, but the Steam mature-content description independently confirms hostile creatures including wolves and humanoids.

Food effects reported in the Beta database

The community Beta database now has named records beyond the official screenshots. The entries below are reported values, not independently checked balance data: the pages do not identify a build ID or provide a screenshot for every field. Check your in-game card before spending materials, and do not combine them with older official screenshot values.

Berry Compote is listed with a maximum-health bonus of 20 and maximum-stamina bonus of 50. Cooked Beans are listed at 30 and 50 respectively. Hearty Stew is listed with a maximum-health bonus of 50, cold resistance of 7, and maximum warmth of 80. Durations and stacking behavior have not been independently checked, so these are not a best-food ranking.

Pre-release data note

Frostrail is still in development. Names and values shown here are tied to published game material, while unfinished recipes, drop rates, costs, and balance numbers stay marked as unpublished until players can verify them in a live build.
