Core train system

The Eden Engine

The Eden Engine is Frostrail's armored steam locomotive: transport, heat source, power plant, workshop, storage base, and the shared objective the Penitent Gardeners must keep alive.

Officially confirmed core system

Overview

Frostrail is built around operating an armored train through the frozen remains of an empire. The crew fuels, powers, drives, maintains, expands, and defends the locomotive while using it as the base between expeditions.

The Steam description names the locomotive the Eden Engine. Developer interviews describe its destruction or breakdown as the run's central fail state.

  • Travel between frozen levels
  • Provide heat and power
  • Host crafting, refining, repair, cooking, weapon, and storage facilities
  • Carry the party's upgrades and progression

Operation

Operating the Eden Engine connects resource gathering to survival. Fuel sustains movement and heat, power supports onboard systems, and repairs or reinforcement keep the train functional under environmental and enemy pressure.

A PC Gamer developer interview says engine upgrades affect train speed and pulling weight. Adding more carriages therefore creates a power tradeoff rather than free capacity.

Cab controls shown publicly

Official Steam screenshots show the train cab with labeled pressure, speed, heat, and consumption instruments, along with control levers. A captured exterior reading shows −28.3 °C in one scene, while a train-interior screenshot shows the character at +5.1 °C beside powered machinery.

Place in the story

Players are Penitent Gardeners traveling north through an empire frozen after its Emperor made a pact with the Void. The train is both their shelter and their means of continuing that pilgrimage.

  • Former empire frozen by a Void-linked pact
  • Revenants and eldritch horrors inhabit the wasteland
  • The crew seeks salvation in the north
